Sleep apnea treatment in Chicago includes a lot of options, and you will need to schedule an appointment with your sleep dentist or doctor to discuss which one can help you sleep soundly throughout the night again. Doing your research beforehand can help you go into that conversation fully informed for a more productive outcome. Keep reading to learn more about the different types of sleep apnea treatments available!

Oral Appliance Therapy

An oral appliance is a small and portable device that works by repositioning the jaw to prevent the soft tissues from collapsing throughout the night. By keeping the airway clear, snoring stops and patients can rest without waking due to a lack of oxygen. There are several options of oral appliances available, including:

  • The Narval: This device works with the same basic design of most oral appliances, but it is made of a softer material that many patients find more comfortable. It is custom-fitted to ensure that it conforms to the shape of the teeth perfectly.
  • Herbst Appliance: This device can be used to treat TMJ (jaw) pain and nighttime teeth grinding as well as sleep apnea. It is flexible and allows for full jaw movement throughout the night.
  • Prosomnus Micro2: This is the only option that uses the special PMMA plastic and does not contain any metal at all. Most patients find this to be the most comfortable option available.

CPAP/Combination Therapy

For more severe cases of sleep apnea, your sleep dentist or doctor may recommend the CPAP, or continuous positive airway pressure machine. This device works by pushing air into the lungs through the night — the force of which keeps the airway open and clear while you sleep. Or, if neither CPAP or oral appliance therapy are sufficient on their own, a patient may benefit from combined therapy: both the CPAP and the oral appliance. This may be a good method for more serious cases because it provides an extra defense against sleep apnea.

Lifestyle Tweaks for Sleep Apnea Relief

In addition to seeking professional treatment for your sleep apnea, making certain lifestyle changes can also help you to regain better sleep throughout the night. This condition is closely linked with being overweight or obese, so taking steps to lose weight can help significantly. You may want to consider adopting vigorous exercise and trying to eat a better diet. In addition to losing weight, it’s also a good idea to stop drinking alcohol right before bed and kick a smoking habit.
